U-ComplyN calculates whole window U values and WER based on an agreed industry standard ‘model’ window. This model window is a side hung next to fixed 1230 x 1480mm and is the window that the relevant standards recommends. U-ComplyN is applicable to casement and TBT double glazed windows.
Real, or actual, windows are unlikely to be of this size and style, but this doesn’t matter. Look at the real window you want to calculate and select the component parts for input to U-ComplyN. U-ComplyN will then calculate the whole window U value and WER appropriate to the model window. This data, together with the spec of the model window. Selecting the correct parts for input to U-ComplyN is fairly straightforward, but these notes are provided as a guide. Although the notes below discuss a casement window, the principles also apply to a TBT window.
Real windows are likely to be different from the model window above and will, generally, fall into two groups:
1) Single opening lights and fixed lights.
2) Complex multilight windows.
These simple styles need to be expanded so that U-ComplyN can calculate a U/WER for compliance purposes.It’s important, though, that the additional parts don’t impact adversely on the performance of the window you want to calculate.
In the case of a fixed light a sash and mullion need to be added, and in the case of a single opening light a mullion must be added. In the case of a mullion, choose a slim mullion and reinforce it with RCM. Similarly, choose a suitable sash and reinforce it with RCM. U-Comply will do the rest and produce the compliance documentation. Complex multilight windows
The multilight style you have to process needs to be condensed/converted into the model window style that U-ComplyN calculates. So, you need to select the frame (and any reinforcement present), the mullion or transom (and any reinforcement present) and the sash (and any reinforcement present).
Consider a common window style:
Start with the outerframe. U-ComplyN assumes a common profile and reinforcement to all sides of the frame. If the frame is simple and has only one type of outerframe and, say, no reinforcement then input the appropriate choices to U-ComplyN. If, however, there are two different frame profiles (a large one to the head for, say, fitting a vent) and reinforcement to only the LH jamb (so that, say, hardware can be anchored to steel) you need to make the right choices as inputs to U-ComplyN so that you don’t overstate the thermal performance of the window. So, in this case, select the larger frame part number in U-ComplyN and input the reinforcement that’s used in part of the frame. As a rule, large frames and heavier/steel reinforcement gives a poor U value and WER so err on the safe side when making choices.
Move on now to the transom/mullion and remember that large profiles and heavier/steel reinforcement give poorer U values and WER. So, if there are different mullion/transom profiles and different reinforcement options within the frame (some members may have no reinforcement), choose the worst case for input to U-ComplyN. Sashes are pretty straightforward. Input the sash profile part numbers and the reinforcement to each side of the sash as prompted by U-ComplyN.
If there a two or more sashes in a frame or a top hung and a side hung then choose the one with the most reinforcing to input to U-ComplyN.
A worst case glazing bead has already been included in U-ComplyN so you don’t need to worry about this.
Given the wide range of glass options available throughout the industry U-Comply lists emissivity and g-values for common glass types but the option is available to enter similar data for glass types not listed on U-ComplyN. Remember, though, that data must be verified by the glass supplier.
